Aluminum cutting machine using a high-voltage electrical arc in a stream of compressed air. Plasma torches are rated by the amount of amperage produced in the cutting stream. The higher the amperage rating, the thicker the metal material that the torch can cut. In general, plasma torches can cut thicker aluminum than steel. Typical amperage ratings are 25 amps for 1/4-inch-thick material and below. A 50- to 60-ampere machine will cut up to a 1/2 inch thick. Machines in excess of 80 amperes will cut 1-inch-thick aluminum sheets.
