How to Cut Metal Pipes

Cutting metal pipes is a necessity when needing an appropriate custom fit for your application. There are different methods and ways of cutting pipe, each depends on what type of pipe you are cutting. Following the proper steps will ensure a successful cut on the most common of pipes. Cut your own pipes rather then a plumber or handyman doing it for you.

Cutting steel pipes

  1. Measure the length needed with your measuring tape and mark with a marker the spot.

  2. Place the pipe on a table with the part you are cutting over the edge. Secure the pipe o that it will not move.

  3. Start cutting with your hacksaw evenly over the top of the pipe. Use a back and forth motion while applying slight pressure. If using a jigsaw, keep a firm steady hand and start at the side of the pipe. Apply slight pressure while cutting through

  4. Continue to cut until all the way through the pipe.

Cutting copper pipe

  1. Measure the length needed, if applicable, with your measuring tape and mark with a marker the spot.

  2. Place the pipe on a table with the area you are needing to cut over the edge.

  3. Open the copper pipe cutter by turning the bottom wheel counterclockwise.

  4. Place the copper pipe cutter on the pipe and turn the wheel clockwise until it is just snug on the pipe, not tight.

  5. Turn the copper pipe cutter around the pipe 3-4 times and then turn the bottom wheel a half a turn.

  6. Continue step 5 and turn the bottom wheel a half a turn after every 3-4 rotations of the cutter. Once through the pipe you are done.
